Extraction stars Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a black market mercenary hired to retrieve and protect the kidnapped son of an imprisoned crime lord. With a duration of 2 hours, Extraction hits a lot of highs and definitely some lows.
Chris Hemsworth is fantastic in this, he does make a great action army hero as we have briefly seen in 12 Strong (2018) and Red Dawn (2012). While he is best known for playing Thor and his other general pretty boy/jock roles, it’s great that he is being recognised further in this role.
The fight choreography is incredible! If you love movies like John Wick and the amazing fight and action choreography they can pull off, you are going to really love these scenes. The use of camera work (thankfully isn’t shaky like a lot of action movies), lighting, lack of music, and sound effects all add to make intense scenes.
Balance of shock without relying on gore, I love gory movies, but sometimes it’s not necessary and Extraction delivers a lot of moments to get the audience to react in an ‘oh my god I can’t believe that happened’ – without going too far.
Storyline – It is a decent enough story for the first hour or so, but it does start to get a bit off base when it becomes more about the background workings rather than the main story and action sequences as it creates quite a few plot holes for itself. If you are looking for a sit down popcorn movie, this isn’t a problem at all – but if you want a movie based on its storytelling. This isn’t it.
The movie was written by multiple people, but the screenplay was done by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo – who of course are well known for working on Marvel movies. So any marvel fan is going to enjoy checking out the movie as they do have similar storytelling styles that have been used in Extraction. If you enjoy movies like Man on Fire and John Wick I’m sure you’ll enjoy this as well.
Extraction is now streaming on Netflix.
