Review – Insurgent

YADFS is sweeping the globe at the moment, for those who are lucky enough to not have contracted it, it stands for Young Adult Dystopian Fatigue Syndrome! After outstanding films like The Hunger Games and Maze Runner, Divergent came along and felt like a cheap and nasty imitation that outstayed the welcome of the genre (I am aware that Maze Runner came out after the first Divergent film) Now for those who do not remember, I could not stand the first film, it was long and boring and not interesting enough to warrant three sequels (yes, that’s right we have two more to go!) This film is much of the same, however the ending draws you in and makes you wish you could see the next film right now. So I can only conclude that it is, like the previous film, a confusing mess of a thing, that should be filmed in a few years with better writers and directors.

The film follows a few days after the events of the last one, Triss (Shailene Woodley) and her boyfriend (I Am Number) Four (Theo James), along with her brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort) and sort of friend Peter (Miles Tellar) are taking refuge in the hippy fanction of their society led by Johanna (Octavia Spencer) when they are tracked down by the evil Jeanine (Kate Winslet) who needs a 100% Divergent to open a mystery box from the founders of their society. The problem is the Divergent is Triss and must go through multiple tests to pass through each faction to unlock the message.thumbnail_20327

If that wasn’t enough (I Am Not Number) Four’s Mum Evelyn (Naomi Watts) is the leader of the factionless and is trying to start a war with Jeanine and the Capital I mean Jeanine and the place in which everyone makes decisions for the rest of the factions…There are a few points in the movie where the actors themselves seem confused by the convoluted plot that quickly cuts to a flashy special effects scene to distract the audience from its tired efforts. divergent_screen_grab_a_l

The special effects are both good and bad, there are a couple of scene in which the green screen is completely unbelievable, to the point of being laughable, but then semi-redeems itself with some super slow motion effects that actually look amazing.

Much like the drama of Triss cutting her pony tail, this movie is a complete mess. Fans will flock to ensure another “hit” and fund the next two films (yes that’s right we are “treated” to one more per year through to 2017!) and with a ending that eventually sparked my interest, hopefully the final two films are a sign of the best is yet to come. divergent_screen_grab_a_l
